Russia Hackney Cab Snow Sleigh Winter Street Scene Izvozchik Vtg. Photo 19thC.
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a horse-drawn sleigh, a type of hackney cab, navigates a snowy street in a historic Russian city. In the background, a monastery or kremlin wall with a gatehouse and a chapel can be seen. Before the rise of automobiles, these sleighs, driven by 'izvozchiki', were the essential form of public transportation during Russia's long and cold winters, a common feature of daily urban life.
