Ostend Belgium Bathing Machines Homes Refugees WW1 Coast Vtg. Photo
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a long row of numbered bathing machines on wheels are lined up, serving as temporary homes for refugees in Ostend, Belgium. During World War I, the German occupation of Ostend led to a significant displacement of the local population. This image captures the resourcefulness required during the crisis, as these seaside changing rooms were repurposed into emergency shelters for families.
