Japan Post Runner Delivering Letter Messenger Barefoot Man Vtg. Photo 19thC.

This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a Japanese post runner, known as a hikyaku, is captured mid-stride while delivering a letter attached to a pole. These couriers were vital for communication in Japan during the Edo and early Meiji periods, renowned for their speed and stamina over long distances. They wore minimal clothing, like the loincloth and sandals seen here, to travel efficiently. The traditional hikyaku system was eventually replaced by a modern, government-run postal service established in 1871.
