This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows two Japanese Buddhist pilgrims are shown in a formal studio setting. Dressed in traditional robes with shaved heads, one holds prayer beads while the other carries a woven traveling hat. The painted backdrop features a classic landscape with Mount Fuji, a sacred and iconic symbol of Japan. This type of staged portrait was common in the Meiji era for both locals and tourists.
