£10.00
Italian Street Musicians Honouring Madonna Zampogna Piffero Vtg. Photo 19thC.
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows two young Italian musicians, a zampognaro playing a bagpipe (zampogna) and a pifferaio playing a shawm (piffero), perform before a shrine to the Madonna. This was a common tradition, particularly in Southern Italy around Christmastime. These shepherd-musicians would travel from the mountains into towns to play novenas and devotional songs, a practice that continues in some areas today.
