China Carrying Chair Sedan Porters Transportation Street Scene Vtg. Photo 19thC.
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows two Chinese porters carrying a passenger in an enclosed sedan chair, a common form of transportation in the late Qing Dynasty. Known as a 'jià o' (轎), these human-powered vehicles were a status symbol used by officials and the wealthy for travel. This scene captures a daily aspect of life in China before the widespread use of modern transportation.
