Uyeno Tokyo Shrine Temple Grounds Stone Lanterns Torii Gate Vtg. Photo 19thC.

This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a stone path lined with traditional lanterns, known as tōrō, leading to a torii gate on the grounds of a shrine in Ueno, Tokyo. Ueno Park, established in 1873, is one of Japan's first public parks and contains several important shrines. The Ueno Tōshō-gū shrine within the park is particularly famous for the hundreds of stone lanterns lining its approach, which were donated by feudal lords.
