This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a portrait of a Kandyan chief from Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, dressed in elaborate ceremonial attire, including a distinctive hat and jacket. Kandy was the last capital of the ancient Sri Lankan kings. The Kandyan chieftains, or Radalas, were high-ranking aristocrats who held significant authority within the kingdom's feudal structure, a status they maintained ceremonially during the British colonial period.
