Peking Beijing Chinese Barbers Work Shaving Queue Hairstyle Vtg. Photo 20thC.

This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows several Chinese barbers attend to their customers outdoors in Peking (now Beijing). The men are shown with the traditional queue hairstyle, a Manchu hairstyle imposed on Han Chinese men during the Qing dynasty. This practice, which involved shaving the front of the head and braiding the remaining hair, was a symbol of submission and was widespread until the fall of the dynasty in 1912.
