This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a building under construction in Panama during the French attempt to build the canal. This ambitious project was led by Ferdinand de Lesseps, the developer of the Suez Canal, beginning in 1881. The French company faced numerous challenges, including disease and engineering problems, and ultimately went bankrupt in 1889, halting the project.
