Ostend Royal Marines Come Ashore Soldiers Boats Pier WW1 Vtg. Photo
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a steam launch tows a boat filled with Royal Marines as they come ashore at a long wooden pier in Ostend. During World War I, the Belgian port of Ostend was a key German U-boat base. It was famously targeted by the British Royal Navy in the Ostend Raid of 1918, an attempt to block the harbor entrance and neutralize the submarine threat.
