This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows tourists ride down a steep cobblestone street in traditional wicker sledges in Funchal, Madeira. Known as "Carros de Cesto," these toboggans are guided by two men called "carreiros." This unique form of transport originated in the 19th century as a fast way for residents to travel from the parish of Monte down to the city of Funchal and has remained a popular tourist attraction ever since.
