Kumamoto Castle Japan Japanese Architecture Fortress Keep Vtg. Photo 19thC.

This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows the main keep (tenshu) of Kumamoto Castle in Japan, situated atop its high, sloping stone walls. A smaller turret is visible to the left, with a simple gate in the foreground. Completed in the early 17th century, Kumamoto Castle was one of Japan's most formidable fortresses. This image captures the castle before much of it was destroyed in a fire during the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion, offering a rare view of the original structure.
