Japanese Firemen Banner Fire Brigade Uniforms Equipment Japan Vtg. Photo 19thC.
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a group of Japanese firemen, known as hikeshi, are shown in their traditional uniforms posing with their brigade's standard, or matoi. During the Edo and early Meiji periods, these fire brigades were vital in combating frequent fires in cities built largely of wood. The elaborate coats and banners served to identify the different groups and rally their members during emergencies.
