This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows three Japanese women in traditional dress sorting silkworm cocoons and reeling silk thread. The women work at wooden stations with trays of cocoons stacked on racks behind them. Sericulture, or silk farming, was a vital industry for Japan's economy and modernization during the Meiji period and early 20th century, with women performing much of the labor.
