Japan Oiran High Class Courtesans Kimono Parasols Garden Vtg. Photo 19thC.

This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a group of Oiran, high-ranking Japanese courtesans, with their child attendants (kamuro) in a traditional garden setting. The women are dressed in elaborate kimonos with distinctive hairstyles and are shaded by large parasols. Oiran were prominent figures in the licensed pleasure quarters of Edo-period Japan, known not only for their beauty but also for their skills in traditional arts. Their public processions were major cultural spectacles.
