Italy Brotherhood Mercy Funeral Procession Hooded Robes Casket Vtg. Photo 19thC.
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a funeral procession of the Brotherhood of Mercy takes place on a cobblestone street in Italy. Members of the confraternity are dressed in their traditional white robes and hoods, a practice to ensure their charitable acts remain anonymous. The Brotherhood of Mercy, or Misericordia, is a lay Catholic organization founded in the 13th century, dedicated to performing corporal works of mercy, such as burying the dead.
