India Snake Charmers Musicians Cobras Baskets Turbans Vtg. Photo 19thC.

This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows two snake charmers in India playing their pungi instruments for their cobras. Snake charming is a traditional street performance in India with a history stretching back centuries. Performers use a flute-like instrument, the pungi, to seemingly hypnotize the snakes, which are often kept in woven baskets. This type of ethnographic portrait was common during the British Raj period.
