Ikao Japan Bridge Boats River Crossing Man Landscape Vtg. Photo 19thC.
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a man carries baskets across a pontoon bridge, or 'bridge of boats,' on a river near Ikao, Japan. These temporary bridges, known as 'funabashi,' were a common sight in Meiji-era Japan for crossing rivers where permanent structures were not yet built or were impractical. Ikao, located in Gunma Prefecture, has long been a famous hot spring resort town.
