House Hanging Balcony Pompeii Italy Ruins Roman Architecture Vtg. Photo 19thC.
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows the ruins of the House of the Hanging Balcony along a cobblestone street in Pompeii, Italy. The ancient Roman city was famously buried and preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This particular house is a notable example of a Roman dwelling with a well-preserved projecting upper-floor balcony, known as a maenianum, which was a rare architectural feature to survive.
