HMS Defence Armoured Frigate Royal Navy Warship Ship Anchor Vtg. Photo 19thC.
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a broadside view of the HMS Defence, a Defence-class armoured frigate of the Royal Navy, at anchor. The three-masted ironclad warship is seen with its sails furled. HMS Defence was one of the first iron-hulled warships built for the Royal Navy, launched in 1861. She and her sister ship, HMS Resistance, marked the beginning of the British ironclad era, serving in various capacities before being sold for scrap.
