This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows the facade of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella in its namesake piazza in Florence, Italy. The large, unpaved square features one of the two obelisks that were used as turning posts for the Palio dei Cocchi, a chariot race held in the piazza from the 16th to the 19th century. The church itself is a masterpiece of Gothic and early Renaissance architecture, with its facade designed by Leon Battista Alberti.
