China Ye T'an Gorge Steamer Donald Mennie River Boat Smoke Vtg. Photo 20thC.
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows the steamer 'Donald Mennie' powers through the turbulent Ye T'an rapids on the Yangtze River in China, its smokestack issuing a large plume of dark smoke. The Ye T'an was one of the most dangerous sections of the Upper Yangtze, requiring specially designed, high-powered vessels for navigation. This route was vital for trade and transport into the interior of China during the early 20th century.
