China Convicts Cangue Punishment Prisoners Guards Street Scene Vtg. Photo 19thC.
This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows a group of Chinese convicts are lined up on a street, each restrained by a cangue, a form of public punishment. They are watched over by guards in front of a large building with columns. The cangue was a device of public humiliation and corporal punishment used in China for centuries, officially abolished in the early 20th century. It restricted movement and made it difficult for the wearer to eat or drink without help.
