Acrobatic Japanese Firemen Ladder Stunts Performance Crowd Vtg. Photo 19thC.

This quality reprint of a vintage photo shows japanese firemen perform acrobatic stunts on tall bamboo ladders for a large crowd. This traditional performance is known as hashigo-nori (ladder-riding), a highlight of the New Year's Firemen's Parade (Dezome-shiki). Originating in the Edo period, these displays demonstrated the agility and bravery required of firefighters who protected Japan's dense, wooden cities.
